Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, welcomed immigrants on Saturday through a bright message on Twitter. The message was conveyed in striking contrast to the US President Donald Trump’s order of momentarily banning all Muslims and refugees from travelling to USA.
“To those fleeing persecution, terror & war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith. Diversity is our strength #WelcomeToCanada,” posted Trudeau, on Twitter.
This piece of communication came after the day Trump sanctioned an overwhelming executive order, which suspends the entry of Muslims and refugees into the country for around 120 days and imposes stringent new controls on travelers from Iraq, Iran, Somalia, Libya, Yemen and Syria for the following 3 months. Since the announcement, travelers from the named nations have been prevented from boarding planes that are US-bound, triggering furious protests as well as airport detentions.
As reported by the New York Times some people, who were travelling and were already mid-air when Trump authorized the executive order, were actually detained on arrival.
However on Saturday, a US federal judge halted part of the temporary immigration ban, instructing authorities to stop the deportation of refugees and travelers who were immobilized at US airports. After talks with Washington on Saturday officials of Canada stated that Canadian citizens, even those with dual citizenship, would not be subject to Trump’s restrictions.“We have been assured that Canadian citizens travelling on Canadian passports will be dealt with in the usual process,” stated Kate Purchase, a spokeswoman for Trudeau.
WestJet, the Canadian airline, said that it would compensate passengers who were stopped from travelling to USA as per the new rule. “WestJet will comply with this executive order,” said the company in a statement. “In the event there are foreign nationals from these countries on WestJet who are denied entry, we will be providing them with a full refund.”
The airliner had already faced one passenger for whom they had to refuse transport to, to the USA as told by a spokeswoman, not specifying the origin of the passenger.
As per the latest census of Canada from the year 2011, 1 out of every 5 people in the nation are foreign-born.
Canada welcomed over 39,670 refugees from Syria, between November 2015 and the starting of January this year, as reported by government statistics.
