Australian PM Mr. Turnbull has announced that the federal goverment will abolish the 457 visa and will be replaced by two new visas.
These changes will not have any effect on the current visa holders. The two new temporary class visas will include a specialised four years visa targeted at higher skills and a two year visa. The present 457 visa program is granted for a period of 4 years, but it paves the way for an immigrant to apply for Australian Permanent Residency.
The Australian government announced yesterday that it will replace the skilled subclass 457 visas with another category of visas. The announcement which was made using Facebook said “put jobs first” and “Australians first”. The announcement signalled the decrease in the number of the employment opportunities available to the skilled foreign workers.
Mr Prime Minister said that the “Australians must have priority for the job opportunities available in the country – so we’re are abolishing the [class] 457 visas. Subclass 457 visas bring short-term foreign workers into Australia. We’ll no longer let 457 visas be passports to jobs that could and should go to Australians. It’s of prime importance that the businesses still get access to the skills they need to grow and invest. So the 457 visa will be replaced by a new temporary visa specifically designed to recruit the best and the brightest in the national interest.”
