Indian PM Modi to discuss visa concerns with Trump during US visit

Narendra Modi, Indian Prime Minister, who is visiting the US in the last week of June, will go all out to convince Donald Trump, the US President, to not discontinue the H-1B visa program that allows IT service companies from India to send skilled workers to America.

Nasscom, the trade body of Indian IT industry, said that Modi would, during his two-day visit, describe to Trump how the program is profiting both nations.

R. Chandrashekhar, president of Nasscom, was quoted by Bloomberg as saying that the IT industry was has been crucial to the innovation and competitiveness of the US enterprises and more than 75 percent of the top 500 American companies avail IT services of Indian workers and companies.

After Trump decided to end the H-1B visa program, Indian IT companies went into a panic mode. Most of the people holding these visas are key workers for companies such as Tata Consultancy Services, Wipro, Infosys and many others.

This move would affect Indian outsourced IT services that are worth $70 billion annually, according to Nasscom.

Chandrashekhar added that the contribution of Indian IT industry is crucial to the GDP of the country and it employs four million people. Indians cannot afford to take the visa issue lightly, hew added.
